Canada's oldest person, who was known for celebrating her birthday with a cold beer, has died just one month and one day shy of her 114th birthday. Merle Barwis, who lived at The Priory residential care facility in Victoria and held the oldest-person title for almost two years, died Nov. 22. Her grandson Terry Barwis, 65, a resident of the nearby community of Sooke, said she had few tips to share with her family about longevity.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office reports that they arrested two people early Thursday. Chaiya Cavan and Samantha Dickerson are charged with theft, possession of stolen property and related charges.

Authorities say two men have been arrested after a car chase through Polk County that reached speeds of 100 mph. A Sheriff's deputy says the SUV driven by 28-year-old Brian Palm of Des Moines sped off on Tuesday after the deputy pulled him over for a traffic violation.

Pleasant Hill police, city officials and the Iowa Department of Public Safety announced three arrests in the Southeast Polk Schools threats case Friday. The teens were taken into custody and charged on Friday afternoon.

Survivors of domestic abuse often feel disconnected and isolated on holidays like Thanksgiving - to keep their location hidden from their abuser, they can't just show up to a relative's home for a reunion, and therefore, they and their families often have no place to go. But Americana Restaurant, located downtown in Des Moines, decided to change that for many of Des Moines' domestic abuse survivors.
